There's no need to play Give Us a Clue when it comes to making up your mind about Daihatsu's new Charade. Although the model won't be on sale in the UK until July, Auto Express has driven it first - and we can deliver our verdict now.
Priced from around ΂£7,000, the Charade will be one of Britain's cheapest cars, and feature a three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine which offers economy of 60mpg and a useful 58bhp. The Daihatsu is most at home in the city, where its narrow track and upright driving position make for good visibility and manoeuvrability. Headroom in the front-wheel-drive supermini is generous, although it feels a little cramped across the shoulders. Fully laden, the three-door struggles to carry more than four adults, but stowage space is more generous, and the 30/70 spilt-fold rear seat gives genuine versatility. The system is not as clever as Honda's seating in the Jazz, but at least it folds flat.
On the road, the steering is direct, and light to touch, the suspension firm, and the ride quite hard. The engine is well insulated from the cabin, too. While its distinctive beat is easy to hear, the noise never becomes invasive. At low speeds, the light, agile Daihatsu proves great fun to drive. However, it's not such good news on the motorway. With a maximum speed of 100mph, the car is strained at cruising speeds, despite its well built five-speed gearbox. It's capable of covering long distances, but every mile feels like hard work.
That said, the costs of running the Charade are undeniably low. And build quality is good, too; despite some thin plastics and cheap-feeling fabric, you get the impression that the car will prove fairly durable. The Daihatsu is also pretty stylish. Our vibrant blue model certainly turned heads; other colours include lime green and yellow, so exhibitionists are well catered for. In all, it looks an interesting addition to the class.

Daihatsu Charade...
With our cities getting more and more congested it's little wonder that people are finally waking up to the qualities of smaller cars. This places Daihatsu in a rather enviable position, as its UK range of cars are all tiny. The latest, the Charade, is sub-supermini sized, but offers space that's nearly big enough to compete in the class above. One of the cheapest cars on sale in the UK the Charade looks even more appealing when you consider the specification, its low cost not translating to skimping on equipment. EL models come with driver and passenger airbags and ABS with EBD, while comfort and convenience items like central locking, electric front windows and mirrors and a CD player are also included. Opt for the SL version for £1,000 more and you'll add air conditioning, side airbags and alloy wheels. Both three and five door versions are offered, with prices starting at just £5995.
Does that value translate to a compromised drive? Certainly not, the Charade is an enjoyable car to steer, the narrow track combined with the upright driving position and good visibility making it very manoeuvrable in its natural habitat - the city. Out of the city limits the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine copes if you're on your own, but fully loaded on a long trip and the Charade proves tiresome. That's something that can be said of its rivals though, overall the Charade offering a very attractive package to those looking for well-specified, super-economical and funky-looking transport.

Daihatsu Charade 2007
Daihatsu's new Charade will return a CO2 figure of only 99g/km, making it the cleanest car in Britain, and putting it into the no-charge Band A company car tax bracket
The firm will officially announce the Eco band figure at next month's Geneva Motor Show, when the Charade gets it worldwide debut. Badged Cuore in Japan, the ChaÂrade will even be available with a fuel-saving, engine start-stop option in 2008. The new city car reaches the UK in July, and it will compete with Citroen's C1, Peugeot's 107 and Toyota's Aygo.
Daihatsu plans to launch a five-door version first, while a three-door model will arrive before the end of 2007. Basic versions will be priced at around £7,000. Debuting an all-new platform, the Charade will be larger than its predecessor, with more space for rear passengers.
It gets an all-new body which evolves the current car's chunky look with bigger headlights, a fresh nose and sculpted wings. Inside, there's improved material quality and more equipment - including knee airbags and ESP as standard.
Under the bonnet is a development of the existing model's 58bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine - the same unit used by the C1/107/Aygo trio - with power boosted to around 70bhp. And Daihatsu is attempting to clear showroom floors in anticipation of the new Charade.
The Terios 4x4 is being offered with £1,000 off across the range - it starts at £11,995 - while the Sirion supermini gets a £500 saving. Prices now start at £6,490 for the base model.
